Art is Not a Luxury.
It is as essential to life as Dawn is to the day. True many live their life
never waking to take notice. But for those who do, there is no greater pleasure than gazing upon beauty.
Wherever they find it
never waking to take notice. But for those who do, there is no greater pleasure than gazing upon beauty.
Wherever they find it
Some time around 2003, I decided to be a full-time studio artist because, to put it simply, it made me happy. The simple act of working with my hands, creating, brings me joy every day. Sharing it, spreading that joy around, seems to me like a good way to spend a life.
Around 2011, with my new home studio, my hands were rarely idle. One day, with a small wad of clay, a bird emerged.
It amused me so I put it on a bowl.
It made people smile.
I made more.
I soon found myself searching for new forms to put birdies on.
The birds have taken over.
They still amuse me.
And we have developed an exciting new process for them!
Hydro dipping provides a whole new way of creating fabulous color combinations!
The vast majority of my current work revolves around functional and decorative pottery for the home and garden. Like this large (14" diam) bowl which makes a great wedding gift.
My process is highly influenced by a background in wood and metal working. I often create a wood or metallic look in my work which is an homage to this background. I also enjoy additions of wood and metal elements to complete the work. My early aesthetic influences would have to be based in my interest in history and archaeology. A viewer will easily notice traditional forms and decorations of many different cultures, ancient and modern, in my early work. Along side my functional line of work that you will find at most of my art fairs, I also enjoy occasionally getting back into sculpture which I often incorporate into teapots such as this work: Sleapytime Tea 2019
Early in my ceramics career, while I had an obsessive fondness for the clay, I developed a deep aversion to glazing. I developed a real appreciation for the beauty of the clay itself as an outcome of that decade-long love/hate relationship.
